The Magnetic Fields – 69 Love Songs (6×10″ – Boxset – Black Vinyl + Slipcase Box + Booklet)

A fully illustrated oral history of the Magnetic Fields’ triple album, 69 Love Songs – an album that was afforded “classic” status by many almost as soon as it was released. LD Beghtol’s book is chatty, incestuous, funny, dark, digressive, sexy, maddening, and delightful in equal measures. It documents a vital and influential scene from the inside, involving ukuleles and tears, citations and footnotes, analogue drum machines, and floods of cognac. Oh, and a crossword puzzle too. The centre of the book is the secret history of these tuneful, acerbic, and sometimes heartbreaking songs of old love, new love, lost love, punk rock love, gay love, straight love, experimental music love, true love, blue love, and the utter lack of love that fill the album – as told by participants, fans, imitators, naysayers, and others. Also included are a lexicon of words culled from the album’s lyrics, recording details, performance notes from the full album shows in New York, Boston and London, plus rare and unpublished images, personal memorabilia, and much much more. Anger crashes into despair and confusion with weird giddy rolls of euphoria and glassy moments of deadened inertia. When this happened to me, in September , I turned to an extraordinary album that helped reflect and dissect the whole experience. Released in , 69 Love Songs is a brilliant, sprawling, three-part record by The Magnetic Fields , the lo-fi indie collective formed in by Boston-born, New York-based songwriter Stephin Merritt with a revolving cast of male and female vocalists plus author Lemony Snicket on accordion.

Pop snobs loved the layers of reference: the songs were always about songs. The subject, he says, is not love, but love songs. With all the cynical wit of a modern Dorothy Parker , he planned to pick apart all the cliches of the canon while showcasing his ability to mass produce catchy melodies like a vintage Brill Building jangler.

There are certain television shows that manage to challenge us intellectually, or require large amounts of thought and attention from their audiences in order to fully comprehend the storyline. While those intense political dramas or concentrated murder mysteries are exciting and hold a place in my heart, more often times than not, I can be found watching my ultimate genre of choice — reality television.

Reality shows are perfect for any occasion. The original is by far the best of them all, though. The show follows a similar layout to most of our favorite reality series.

The modestly recorded, immodestly conceived grand revue that is the Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs still doesn’t get the credit it deserves. At least not for me. For this is the slow-creeper that, during and beyond, stole my heart, blew my mind, broke my funny bone in 12 places and practically dislocated my shoulder carrying the sodding thing everywhere I went in the pre-iPod age. It’s one of the most avidly dissected yet little-known albums in recent years, for three reasons.

First, as a “critics’ band”, the Magnetic Fields are lavished with torrents of slavering rhetoric and respect particularly in the US , yet eschew the styling, attitude, production value and onstage pizzazz demanded by radio and mainstream; the notoriously downbeat and reticent Stephin “New Sondheim” Merritt is far from your typical pop star.

Second, even pared down from the originally intended songs, the 69 tracks here run to three hours, an insurmountable Clarissa of a record to a generation of Spotify surfers for whom “value for money” in music is as archaic as a student grant. Finally, it fell between the gaps of the end-of-decade polls, released too late in in the US to be considered in time, and still thought of as a 20th-century album in the UK despite its early release date here. Thanks, Wikipedia.

Stephin Merritt: 69 Love Songs + more vintage synths

As its title indicates, 69 Love Songs is a three-volume concept album composed of 69 love songs , all written by Magnetic Fields frontman Stephin Merritt. The album was originally conceived as a music revue. Stephin Merritt was sitting in a gay piano bar in Manhattan, listening to the pianist’s interpretations of Stephen Sondheim songs, when he decided he ought to get into theatre music because he felt he had an aptitude for it.

Then I realized how long that would be. So I settled on sixty-nine. I’d have a theatrical revue with four drag queens.

After seeing the first incarnation of Gnap! Joining Syam in the writing duties were Gnap! The effect is ultimately a terrific thematic mix of emotional payoffs concerning characters that come and go between scenes. Sometimes humor gets emphasized over the simple, quiet silences. But when the actors commit to honesty, they squarely connect. Each scene corresponds with at least one song off the album, either projected on screen or creatively in the set.

Part of the fun for fans is to check them off internally as the show progresses. Not being able to hear all the songs dampened the effect just a twinge. The couple continues to kvetch as the show progresses, but their quiet moments are the most enjoyable. Despite the successful but overwhleming slant toward comedy, the emotional heart of the show lands eventually on the shoulders of Joel Osborne as he searches for the actual ” Book of Love ” to reveal its secrets.

Crushed by his unrequited advances to scene-stealer Courtney Hopkin, he eventually finds the sweetest, most honest form of love from the equally sincere Brammer. Their union at the end makes the whole two hours prior worth the journey.

on the record

In the mids, Elizabeth Barrett Browning counted the myriad ways that she loved thee. But rather than composing a mere album of distinctive takes on tender ballads, Merritt set out to make a three-disc set filled with a massive dose of his own acerbic twists on affection and affairs of the heart. And in the process, he audaciously reinvented the art form itself. But ultimately, it is the pure sentiments and romantic insight of these songs that unabashedly shine through, leaving the listener vacillating between hysterical laughter and anguished tears from one penetrating song to the next.

Just like love itself, these incisive numbers arouse a series of intense, conflicted emotions that reveal truths about ourselves at our most vulnerable moments, while also offering a therapeutic sense of healing when our fragile hearts ultimately get broken or misused.

Legend has it that Stephin Merritt came up with the idea for 69 Love Songs while sitting in an elegant midtown Manhattan piano bar. He originally planned for it to be a live musical revue, performed with a rotating cast of singers in the plush hotel bars and cabarets of New York City.

It drew worldwide attention with comparisons to legends Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Important information when ordering with Fatbeats. As the sprawling magnitude of its cheeky title suggests, 69 Love Songs is Stephin Merritt ‘s most ambitious as well as most fully realized work to date, a three-disc epic of classically chiseled pop songs that explore both the promise and pitfalls of modern romance through the jaundiced eye of an irredeemable misanthrope. A true A-to-Z catalog of touchingly bittersweet love songs that runs the gamut from tender ballads to pithy folk tunes to bluesy vamps, the sheer scope of the record allows all of Merritt ‘s musical personas to converge — the regular use of guest vocalists recalls his work as the 6ths , the romantic fatalism suggests the Gothic Archies project, and the stately melodies evoke the Future Bible Heroes.

The whole is much greater than the sum of its parts, however — for all of Merritt ‘s scathing wit and icy detachment, there’s a depth and sensitivity to these songs largely absent from his past work, and each one of these 69 tracks approaches l’amour from refreshing angles, galvanizing the love song form with rare sophistication and elegance. Naturally, given a project of this size there’s the occasional bit of filler, but all in all, 69 Love Songs maintains a remarkable consistency throughout, and the highlights “I Don’t Believe in the Sun,” “All My Little Words,” “Asleep and Dreaming,” “Busby Berkeley Dreams,” and “Acoustic Guitar,” to name just a few are jaw-droppingly superb.

Also available as three individual releases, 69 Love Songs was nevertheless conceived as a whole and is best absorbed as such, with all of its twists and turns taken in stride; despite its three-hour length, the music boasts the craftsmanship and economy that remain the hallmarks of classic American pop songwriting, a tradition Merritt upholds even as he subverts the formula in new and brilliant ways.
